How to Promote Personal Stories?

Personal storytelling is one of the most intimate and meaningful ways to connect with others. Yet, making these projects visible and inspiring people to start their own is a challenge. How do we promote personal stories in a world driven by entertainment, quick content, and commercial incentives?

To answer this question, I sat down with Nicolas, the founder of Sams’ Echoes, to discuss his ongoing efforts to bring personal storytelling into the public sphere—and the lessons he’s learned along the way.

The Challenge: A Niche Without a Search Demand

Nicolas has been diving deep into data and web analysis to understand how to reach people. His findings? The search volume for keywords related to personal storytelling—such as biographies, memoirs, sentimental items, and archive preservation—is extremely low. These topics do not attract nearly as much attention as common interests like music, sports, or travel planning.

On social media, the situation is similar. While Facebook groups exist around certain aspects of personal history (such as city history, genealogy, or niche hobbies), there are very few active communities centered around sharing personal stories. When they do exist, they often consist of professionals rather than everyday individuals exchanging their family experiences.

Nicolas explains why this makes sense: “Personal stories are private by nature. People are not actively searching for them, nor are they eager to publish their family’s history online. It’s not that they don’t care—it’s that these stories are meant to be shared in close circles, not with strangers.”

This presents a challenge: how do you market a concept that people are not looking for?


Why Traditional Online Advertising Won’t Work

Most online businesses grow by paying for ads on Google and Meta (which control 75% of web traffic in 2024, so after the introduction of LLM supported searches). This strategy works when you can convert website visitors into customers—but personal stories projects don’t function this way. People don’t make impulse decisions about preserving their family history; they don’t just click a link and start a biography project on the spot.

So, Nicolas knew that ads wouldn’t be a sustainable solution. Instead, he needed an organic way to build an audience—one that resonates with the true value of personal storytelling: the joy of sharing love and memories with those who matter most.


Finding the Right Approach: Branding, SEO & Community Engagement

Instead of pushing people to a website with ads, Nicolas is focusing on a more long-term and engaging strategy:

SEO (Search Engine Optimization): Creating valuable, well-researched content so that when people do search for related topics, Sams’ Echoes is there to help them.

Social Media Engagement: Building an organic presence through content that sparks emotion, discussion, and sharing.

Messaging that Sticks: The key to engagement is identity—people react to content that feels personal and relevant to them. Nicolas believes that tapping into themes of family, legacy, and love will be crucial.

Community First: Rather than talking about personal stories, show them. Make people feel them. Personal storytelling is inherently non-commercial and should be presented as an act of care, not a service to purchase.


Lessons from a Biographer & an Influencer

Nicolas recently spoke with D., a talented biographer in Frankfurt, who shared her first-hand experience with digital marketing. Despite running Google ads and using SEO tactics, she found that attracting clients was both expensive and unpredictable. Yet, she confirmed that some approaches do work—especially word-of-mouth, storytelling, and emotional engagement.

Another key conversation was with Mouni Mouni, a highly successful influencer in Burkina Faso who promotes road safety in his country. His Facebook community of over 300,000 people is a case study in how to build an audience without spending money on ads. His advice:

Adapting to Social Media’s Rules

One of Nicolas’s biggest takeaways? Facebook’s algorithm is designed to keep users on the platform. His initial approach—sharing links to his blog—was a mistake because social media platforms actively suppress content that directs traffic away.

Instead, he’s now working on content designed to thrive within social media itself—posts that engage people without requiring them to leave Facebook. To further optimize this, he has created a new personal profile, Nico Sams, solely dedicated to Sams’ Echoes. This clean-slate approach ensures better visibility and engagement, and more algorithm benevolence.


Next Steps: Trial, Error, and Perseverance

With a refined strategy, Nicolas is now launching a series of tests:

But even with all this effort, he acknowledges that success won’t be immediate. “There are probably thousands of possible ways to promote personal storytelling, but only a few will truly work—and only over time.”

What does give hope, however, is that people react positively when exposed to these stories. They engage, share, and express curiosity. Now, the challenge is to scale this interest into action.
